instead of being ashamed of having his trick discovered, wrote a pretty little poem to the princess, in which he said, that indeed the bowl had sparkled, but as soon as she looked on it the light died out, dimmed by the brightness of her eyes, and though he threw away the bowl he threw away at the same time all shame and still begged for her favor.
 To this the princess did not deign an answer; but from that time till this, when any one has thrown away all sense of shame* and does what he ought not he is said to have “thrown away the bowl**.”

  THE JEWEL BRANCH OF HORAI.
 Now the prince who was sent in quest of the floating mountain of Horai was very cunning and very rich, and he determined to spare neither treasure nor pains in gaining the hand of Princess Splendor. To the court nobles he pretended that he was going to some celebrated hotsprings for his health and would not be back for a long time, but to the princess he sent word that he was about to set out in quest of the jewelbranch.
