temple, hidden away up in the mountains, and there in front of the shrine, he found an old stone bowl covered with soot and dirt; taking this he put it in a bag of beautiful silk brocade, and fastening to it a branch of artificial flowers, he dropped a letter in the bowl telling how he had shed his heart's blood in crossing seas and mountains to obtain it, and then sent the gift to the princess. The prinscess was greatly astonished to see the bowl, for she did not think this lazy prince would take the trouble to go to India, but she had not yet proved it. She knew, that if it were the real bowl of Buddha it ought to sparkle like diamonds, and so hastening to open the bag she looked inside.
