THE SHELL IN THE SWALLOW'S NEST.
 Lord Overstone, after receiving the commands of the princess, sent for the chief of his retainers and asked him if he knew where a swallow was building its nest. The chief, much surprised, inquired what his lord wanted to do with a swallow's nest; and when he heard, it was not the nest but the little cowry-shell which the swallow keeps hidden away, that he wanted , he replied, that he did not know about the shells, but he had killed many swallows and had never found anything in their stomachs worth having, but possibly these shells were to be found when they laid their eggs;
  however, as there were a great many swallows building nests in the thatch of the kitchen of a nobleman's house not far away, in the holes through which the smoke escaped, if some one climbed up to the roof, he could soon see if there were any cowry-shells in the nests when they laid their eggs.
 The lord highly delighted immediately sent twenty men down to the kitchen, where they built a scaffolding and climbed to the roof. They had scarcely reached the roof, when their master sent to know if they had not found the cowry-shell. But the swallows were so frightened by the confusion that they had flown far away and would not come back to their nests.
 The lord was at his wit's end, when an old retainer came up and whispering in his ear
