parents' hearts and the light of their home, for the same soft radiance ever shone from her wherever she went and there was no need of lamp or candle in her presence.
 When the time came for naming her, a royal feast was given, to which the guests from all the country round were invited. The name selected for her was Nayo Take no Kaguya Hime, Princess Splendor of the Feathery Bamboo, as expressive of her lithe figure and supernatural radiance. During the three days of the feast any one might look unabashed upon the bewildering beauty of the princess, but after the festivities were over her parents kept her within the inner rooms and gardens of the palace, so that not even those who lived near by could get a glimpse of her fair face.
  THE COURTING.
 It was not long before the fame of the princess' beauty spread far and wide, till there was not a man in all the world who was not crazy to see her. Even many of the nobility left their palaces and spent day and night hovering around the garden enclosure, hoping that by some happy chance they might get a passing sight of her through an opening in the hedge-row.
 Among the many suitors who came to court the beautiful princess were two princes of the blood royal and three of the highest nobles in the realm, who by their rank and persevering devotion commended themselves to the old bamboo-cutter. But
