PRINCESS SPLENDOR THE WOOD-CUTTER'S DAUGHTER. Once upon a time long, long ago there was an old wood-cutter called Taketori who lived all alone with his wife in a little cottage at the foot of a mountain. He was so poor that he made his living by wandering o'er hill an dale cutting bamboos and bringing them home to be made into all sorts of useful things.
