THE “JINRIKISHA” RIDING ON A RAINY DAY. | THE AINUS AT DINNER.
The Ainus are considered by ethnologists to be the aborigines of Japan. They are characterized by their thick beard, diminutive stature and gentle nature, and their physiognomy forms a distinct type. Civilization has as yet but scantily told on their mode of life, but the government is doing much towards their elevation. The group in the photograph represents them at dinner, the one with a hood, sitting by a gray bearded man, being evidently the hostess. and the man standing in the middle, the host. |
