A “MATSURI” (TEMPLE FESTIVAL).
Japanese streets never look gayer with bright colored lanterns on the eaves of every house, shows and entertainments of every description, than on the occasion of temple festivals. The Mikoshi, a portable shrine, is borne on men's shoulders from street to street lined by people to witness the sacred procession. We have before us such a group made up chiefly of boys, who hail the festival as one of their merry making occasions of the year. |
