SUMMER EVENING ON THE SHIJO RIVER.
During the hot season of the year, the bank of the Shijo river becomes a popular resort of the Kyoto people seeking to escape the heat which is especially intense in that localty. While the season lasts, all the restaurants along the Eastern and Western banks put up temporary stands, projecting over the river, gayly decorated with lanterns. A lively scene is kept up every night on the banks and the dry bed, thronged with people coming to enjoy the cool breeze from the river. |
A WELL.
In Japan, water is not generally pumped out of the well, but it is drawn up in a little bucket with a long bamboo pole, as seen in the photograph. For a deep well, the principle of pulley is applied; water being drawn up by means of a rope with a bucket at each extremity. In the leading cities of the country, water works have already been constructed or are in the course of construction, adding much to the convenience and comfort of the citizens. |
