But these serve only to accentuate even more vividly the brightness of the rest of the procession, as it wends its sinuous way through a dark bordering of street passengers, whose garments of many shades of dull blue and prune, make a fitting setting for the gay pageant, which has for further contrasting back-ground, the greys and browns of the buildings of a Japanese street, the whole forming an ensemble as strikingly unlike the sombre solemnity of a European funeral as it possible for the imagination to conceive.
