WRESLING MATCH Being a most exciting game, wrestling match is the favorite sport to a class of people in Japan. Many interesting traditions and legends are connected with this athletic performance, which the professionals always narrate with pride. The arena is made of a raised groud strewn with sand, on four corners of which stand pillars, draped with a red cloth, supporting a temporary roof from whose eaves are hung short purple curtains. Wrestlers have a huge stature and iron regulations of the guild. There are said to be 48 authorized “te” or hands within which the champion can display his prowess. The umpire holds a lacquered wooden fan which he raises towards the victor at the completion of the match. |
THE “JINRIKISHA”.
A neat velvet cushioned seat with springs, and the absence of danger, render the jinrikisha a most comfortable vehicle. Coolies who pull it have remarkably nimble limbs and easily run from three to four miles an hour. The Jinrikisha has a top which can be raised in case of rain or when it is too hot to keep off the rays of the sun. Though, not long ago unknown outside of Japan, it has become at present a popular mode of conveyance in other parts of the Orient. |
