MOTHER AND HER BABY.		COURTESANS.  A large number of the abandoned women in Japan have been forced to sell their honour out of a mistaken idea of fulfilling their filial duty in saving their parents from financial embarrassment. Their position is rather to be pitied than scorned. The style of their dress, as seen in the photograph, is different from that of an ordinary woman, being a conspicuous loose robe embroidered with gaudy flowers and fantastic patterns. Of late years there have been some efforts made by philanthropists towards the strict prohibition of licensed courtesans.
